Can You Sleep In Your Contact Lenses
Autor
One aspect of wearing contact lenses that is frustrating for a number of people is that they can only be worn for a short length of time. A large percentage of people who wear contact lenses would like to wear their contacts continuously and that of course also means keeping the lenses in overnight.
Well, unless you are wearing lenses specifically designed for longer wear, then you should not wear your contacts longer than is recommended.
So maybe you have fallen asleep with your contact lenses in and haven’t suffered any dire consequences as a result. But you must realise that although you may not have suffered any adverse effects on the odd occasion, you should not sleep in your contacts unless you are wearing lenses that have been specifically approved for overnight wear and that you are wearing them in a manner as prescribed by your eye doctor
So why shouldn’t you wear your regular contact lenses continuously?
Well when you are wearing contact lenses, the flow of oxygen to the surface of your eye (the cornea) is restrictied and the longer you wear your contacts the longer the flow is restricted.
In very extreme cases where the contact lenses have been worn for way too long, new veins grow out into the cornea as your body attempts to correct the oxygen deficiency.
Now there is no need to be alarmed if you have taken the occasional nap in your contacts but if you want to sleep in your lenses, consult your eye-doctor and ask them to prescribe a lens that is suitable for this purpose. There are a few simple steps to take to ensure that you are practicing safe contact lens use and if you follow these you shouldn’t experience any problems when wearing contact lenses.
Many of the new silicone hydrogels are approved for overnight wearing including the Focus Night and Day lens which is the only lens approved for a full 30-days of wear. There are also numerous conventional (hema) soft lenses that are approved for up to 7 days of extended wear and you will find that all of the major manufacturers offer these types of lenses.
